Worn shaft seal area created by mis-alignment and stagnant water corrosion. Repaired by "cladding".

"Cladding" - Welding of a worn main strut bearing area. The shaft will then be straightened and the area turned down in the lathe.
All couplers are fitted to the shaft and the face and pilot measured and corrected if needed. This process is repeated several times in the shop to ensure the results are the same at installation.
